Join me tonight chatting to awesome guest, ultra runner Tom Evans who came 3rd in Western States 100 this year, fastest ever time for a Brit – on his first ever 100 mile ultra!!! We shall mine him for tips!

Tom also holds course records for the Coastal Challenge in Costa Rica and the South Downs Way 50, both last year. He shot to fame when he came 3rd in the Marathon des Sables in 2017 and has since left the British Military (he was a British Army Captain) to become a full time athlete sponsored by Red Bull and adidas Terrex.

Tonight Tom talks about his scientific approach to 100 mile and ultra marathon training, his general weekly training hours and mileage, the importance of rest and how to recognise over training. He reveals how training at altitude in Ethiopia also changed his attitude and turned him into a better athlete not just a better runner.

He then goes through the things he learned on his first ever 100 mile ultra run at the Western States 100 miler, from nutrition and gear through to pacing and mental preparation.

Enjoy Tom’s advice, he has learnt a great deal over the past two year and is looking forward to learning a whole lot more as he is in this for the ‘long run’ 😉 And what does he think about Kilian Jornet’s 2018 Bob Graham Round record…? “It’s breakable,” he says. Give him a few more years…

I’ll hopefully be catching up with Tom at the UTMB in a couple of weeks, he is not running the TdS anymore as he is still recovering from WS100 but will be out there cheering his team on. His next big race will be the Mountain Running World Championships in November 2019. We’ll be watching!
